Dean Spanley (2008)
My rating: 6/10
Sam Neill talks about that time he was a dog, which fixes Peter O'Toole's maladaptive avoidant behavior regarding his grief. Given the cast, the whole thing is of course quite well acted, but doesn't really do much for me otherwise.

Woof, wolf, woof
It’s a grand life, a dog’s life… It is undoubtedly the most perfect form of enjoyment that can be known. Where else shall we find those hourly opportunities for sport, romance and adventure, combined with a place on the rugs of the wisest and greatest?” – The Dean remembers his life as a dog. From Lord Dunsany’s novel, “My Talks with Dean Spanley”, Chapter 8. Do you remember that Bugs Bunny…

September Movie Wrap Up
All About Evil - 7/10. It’s campy, kitschy, fun and unique. It’s not exactly a masterpiece, but Natasha Lyonne in a horror movie making snuff films is something you truly can’t go wrong with for a spooky season watch.
Cocaine Godmother - 3/10. I wasn’t impressed with. I had high hopes for this when I saw the trailer had Catherine Zeta Jones with a younger woman as a love interest. There were a few scant moments worth watching for that, but it did not end well.
Dean Spanley - 1/10. Could not get into the story. I really just mostly skimmed my way through this one. I heard it was one of Gillian Anderson’s favorites, but it was not for me.
Moving On - 8/10. Look, I’ve seen better stuff with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin together, but this was still a solid choice. It was actually one of my favorites of the month. It’s equally as fun as it is heartbreaking and the only thing that would have bumped its rating is if they had made Jane and Lily’s characters a couple in the end. Sadly, I’m still waiting for that to happen.
The Affair (aka The Glass Room) - 2/10. For those who like dramatic and atmospheric films, this one is probably for you. It definitely wasn’t for me. The barely there, devastating wlw romance did not help it in any way, unfortunately.
The Vanishing - 5/10. Was it compelling? Not really, but it was just interesting enough to watch at 2x speed. Not sure I could have sat through it at 1x. Not one of Sandra Bullock’s better films, that’s for sure, but it wasn’t horrible.
Vamps - 8/10. Another fun spooky season watch. If you like the concept of a quirky modern vampire film, this is it. It was quite enjoyable overall, though would have gotten a 7 had it not been for Sigourney Weaver as my darling Cisserus. This movie scored a whole point higher just because of her character.
If you’d like to be tagged in my monthly movie wrap ups, then please let me know.

Old Fisk: Did we win the Boer war? Young Fisk: I believe we lost more slowly than the other side -------- Young Fisk: I wouldn't call it a lie, more like a truth deferred. -------- A couple of quotes from the 2008 British comedy drama, Dean Spanley, which is based on a novella by Lord Dunsany. I highly recommend the film. It's very funny and what a cast! Sam Neill (one of my all-time favorite actors), Jeremy Northam, Bryan Brown and Peter O'Toole. Pretty crazy.

Dean Spanley, 2008
If you haven’t seen this delightfully odd little movie, you should. Bring your kleenex, because our boy, along with Bryan Brown and that charmer O’Toole, will break your heart.
